granola

lately, i've been feeling like i'm really getting annoyed with the tree-hugging, crunchy granola, save the earth community around me. not that saving the earth is a bad thing-it's a great thing. but most of the time, the people around me (earthy white people) go really overboard with it. i mean, REALLY overboard.

i mean, most of the (white) liberals around me pride themselves on being non-judgmental and spiritual-but-too smart-for religion, etc., but don't let them find out that you didn't recycle your plastics, or that you bought products at a big box store instead of a local spot, or that you don't regularly bring your own reusable shopping bag with you to Whole Foods or New Seasons or People's Co-op( is there anywhere else to shop???). Uh oh, you're the devil, and you're contributing to the earth's demise.

and i don't know if it's just me? i know people love their pets. but why does it seem like oregonians are the only ones who treat their dogs like human beings that must be taken into the stores and restaurants? and don't let them find out you purchased your puppy from a store or a breeder instead of a shelter adoptee. ohhhh no...you're going to hell! wait....they don't believe in hell, or heaven, or god. i guess they'll just consider you a dispicable human being.

i am just finally realizing that it's time for us to consider moving. this liberal, granola mentality is just SO. NOT. ME. and it seems increasingly hard to find people like myself. sure, i'm into saving the earth, or abused dogs. but let's keep it in it's place, people.

i cringe when i see bumperstickers that say "keep portland weird". i cringe because for the most part, portland is not weird. yuppie, granola, yes. but weird? where? there's a small section of people that are weirdos. i'd rather not be lumped into that entire group just by living here.

when i go out, people here don't dress up. i went out to a late night spot in the Alberta district recently. i'd say 90 percent of the people had jeans, clogs, no make-up on, some type of fleece jacket type gear. i actually felt out of place for looking nice.

this place is just not me anymore. i went to the farmers market today, and of course the people were all one-dimensional(all white). as the morning went on i counted 4 more black people. i kept trying to make eye contact with them to make myself feel "okay". and before you say that i have insecurity issues, let me just say that i'm around white people CONSTANTLY. occasionally it would be nice to see more people of color in one place besides a nightclub!

Where to start. If you weren't on the West coast I'd swear this was my wife writing this blog. I think your observations about the holier-than-thou crowd was dead on.

We live just outside of Washington D.C. in a liberal trendy area that bans big box retailers, embraces Whole Foods, etc., and of course is so green. Yes, it makes me want to puke.

My tofu eating, Birkenstock wearing neighbor tried to lecture me on about needing to recycle more (yes, she monitors her neighbors recycling bins) and I had to find a polite way of telling her to mind her own business, while reminding her to cut her grass rather than letting her yard go natural (great for mice).

I am with you on these trendy lefties. For now, I just try and ignore them.

Funny, I am a black female living in Boise ID, thinking about moving to Portland for the 'variety' of people...ergo--a few more blacks. Girl, you think Portland is white, Boise ID is really really white. I can go for a week and not see a single black person.

I fly to Portland for Hair appointments sometimes. Annoying a$$ self-righteous folks don't bother me as much as I feel their extremism, self-worship and lack of tolerance for people not like them is a weakness and a cry for attention.

Your post is so true that it is almost painful! I don't know the answer. I just try to ignore them. I am really glad I don't have to deal with raising children. Just the thought of the conversations with sanctimonious parents on the playground or at the schools about clothes, food, activitiy etc, I'd go crazy!

You are spot on about the dogs...ugh.

You may want to count your blessings. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and there is a very diverse community here and yet the citizenship of our black folk is embarassing. Even in a place such as this it's difficult to find a fellow person of color to relate to, who is not "ghetto". Frankly I feel more comfortable avoiding most of them.

black girl, should you decide to leave may i suggest Denver? Not as much going on in some ways, for example you have to drive to the farmer's market. but there is an established black middle class, there's not as much racial tension, and in general it's live-and-let-live. and also WAY more purebred dogs and fewer mutts. i find it a refreshing break from portland in the people-to-people department. and i also miss being close to really cool shops, lively arts/music scene and farmer's markets. oh yeah and the white people here do tend to be more right-wing but you don't have to hang out with so many of them if you don't want to.

I am a black girl and I'm originally from Chicago, Ill. I've lived in Atlanta, Ga...Denver, CO...but for most of my life I've lived in San Diego, CA. I'm 42 yrs old so I've experienced a lot meaning the people, age groups, club scenes, etc. I say move here to San Diego or at least visit as much as possible to try it on for size. It's far enough away from Los Angeles to not be a part of that hussle and bussle but close enough to drive up and party or shop on the weekends. :) It's VERY diverse...I think you might like it. I thought about moving to Portland last year but I keep hearing people tell me the black folks are very cliquish and a lot of the blogs I've read people had a lot of very prejudice things to say towards black people. I decided no matter how hard it may be in California right now, due to the economy, my peace of mind is worth it.

As I drive down parts of NE Portland I feel lost. I have never seen so many bike strips, dogs, and blond dread locs in my life. The big old historic houses are now demolished and replaced with $400,000 town houses.

Everything in this self righteous city is going green. Why...because they care, nope! It's because it's SOMETHING to do around here. I guess Saturday Market and beating drums on Hawthorne is getting boring.

This place looks more and more like a shelter for homeless teen...with bikes...and dogs day by day.

Portland is so self righteous and smug. Meanwhile if you REALLY look at this place you will see the schools are shambles, the unemployment rate is through the roof, every third house has a for sale sign, and the roads are imploding from disrepair, but we have those good ol' bike strips being painting everyday. I am moving my family out of this place in 4 months, can't wait.

UMM, don't move to Las Vegas. You are annoyed by those things, but hey, go to a place where people don't even give a flying F**k. Trash, ill-treated animals, no landscape except broken glass and dirt. Oh yeah, San Diego has a lot of Blood gang members, Denver is no better than any of the sunbelt cities (as far as prejudice, racism, and diversity.) Basically, what I am saying is there is pricks everywhere you go, I honestly think you have, or had it good in Portland, just keep that in mind where ever you in the U.S., it is still the U.S.
